Brill type 4 wheel

The majority of the Porto trams were of a four wheel type designed by Brill of Philadelphia at the beginning of the twentieth century. There were the following batches:

  • Brill-23: 20 cars built by Brill of Philadelphia in 1909. Width 2.25 m and length of the saloon 5.56 m. Original numbers: 251-270.

  • Brill-23: 25 cars built by Brill of Philadelphia in 1910. Width 2.25 m and length of the saloon 5.89 m. Original numbers: 271-295.

  • Brill-23: 20 cars built by Brill of Philadelphia in 1912. Width 2.25 m and length of the saloon 5.97 m. Original numbers: 171-190.

  • Brill-28: about 40 cars built by the workshops of the tramcompany in the period 1924-1938. Width 2.40 m and length of the saloon about 5.95 m.

  • Brill-28: about 30 cars reconstructed out of Brill-23 cars by widening the saloon from 2.25m to 2.40m in the period 1925-1937. A few (prototypes) got 2.32m wide bodies.

  • Brill-28 Plataforma-Salão: 26 cars reconstructed out of Brill-28 and  Brill-23 cars by the workshops in the period 1938-1946.

  • Brill-32: 12 cars built by the workshops of the tramcompany in the period 1927-1928. Width 2.40 m and length of the saloon about 6.50 m.

  • Brill-23 Plataforma-Salão: 10 cars reconstructed out of Brill-23 cars by the workshops in the fifties.

Alas reliable data about the (re)constructions done by the workshops fail, which makes it difficult to trace of each individual car its origins and career.

Also the STCP did perform a number of reconstructions. Platforms were extended into the Salão type, doors were fitted to cars with extended platforms and some cars did get retractable steps at the entrances.

As the history of these cars is complicated, the description is divided into five chapters:

  1. The narrow Brill cars (Brill-23)
  2. The wide Brill cars (Brill-28)
  3. The Italianos of 1927/8 (Brill-32)
  4. The cars with extended platforms from the period 1938-1945 (Brill-28 PlataformaSalão)
  5. The cars modernised by the STCP around 1950
