Marginal
Route
Praça
da Liberdade - Infante - Alfândega - Massarelos - Foz (Castelo)
- Castelo do Queijo - Matosinhos (Brito Capelo) - Leixoes (Leça da Palmeira)
This was the original line of the Companhia Carril Americano do
Porto á Foz e Matosinhos opened in 1872/3 between Rua dos Ingleses (Infante)
and Matosinhos.
Length: 11.9
km (until
1960, closure of Matosinhos - Leixoes), 10½ km (until 1968,
closure of Praça da Liberdade - Infante), 9.7 km (until 1993,
closure of Castelo do Queijo - Matosinhos); Time
of a single journey: 52½ minutes (1934); 40 minutes (1991)
Starting 1960 this line was linked at Praça da Liberdade with the lines 9 and
9/ (Praça-Ermesinde
and Praça-Areosa) until the closure of these two lines in 1966:
trams changed their number the stop before Praça and in fact made the
complete travel Matosinhos-Ermesinde or Matosinhos-Areosa. Coming from
Matosinhos in the direction of Ermesinde / Areosa the tramcars directly went from
Rua Mouzinho da Silveira to Rua de Sá da Bandeira without entering Praça.

Rolling stock
Mainly bogie cars of the series 266-269, 270-277 and 280-289. combined between
Infante and Leixoes with the bogie trailers of the series 1-7. Shunting at Infante was performed
by gravity, possible of the lower end of the slope which
prevented the use of the trailers up to Praça da Liberdade. This trailor service
between Infante and Leixoes was assured until 1960, between 1960
and 1966 only in weekends during the summer months between
Infante and Castelo do Queijo.
Allocation January 1935
7 Bogies/Belgas
Revenue
In 1958 these lines took part of 7.9%
of the revenue of the tram system.
Remarkable
During a period
after the closure of Praça da Liberdade - Infante (1968), there
existed a peak hour service which still used this route. The tram (usually a bogie
tram) came from Boavista via Carvalhosa to Carmo and Praça (a
bogie tram down Rua dos Clerigos, but not up!). Left Praça at 7h05,
went through Infante to Matosinhos (7h40), went then back to Foz
(Castelo), where it left at 8h15, and then went up Av. Boavista
to Carmo via Carvalhosa (arrival at Carmo at 8h52). From there,
the tram went back to the depot Boavista.
Line 1 closed 10 September 1994
In 1999 line 1E returned as part of the heritage network.
