Almost
faded away
(1975-1996)
In the
second half of the seventies the decline was continued. First the
lines to the north (6, 7 & 8) were closed. Only
replacement was not by trolleybuses anymore, but by Diesel buses.
The trolleybuses themselves were to be replaced by Diesel too.
The "Carvalhosa" route was closed, which was the end of
the line numbers 2, 4 and 5. Their work was
taken over by the "Palácio" lines 3, 18 and 19. Also the Batalha - Boavista route
disappeared, which was the end of the lines 16 & 17. Soon after that
the lines via "Palácio" were cut back from Carmo to
Boavista. And from 1978 in the late evenings (after 21h00) and on
sundays the tram operations were suspended complete. A long
period without alterations followed, except for the replacement
of line 3 by Diesel buses in 1984. The
maintenance of the cars was poor. All looked that the final
closure could happen any moment. In 1993 the route to Matosinhos
was closed. Line 19 was taken over by buses and line 1 cut back
to the Castelo do Queijo. One year later also line 1 was replaced
by buses, leaving only line 18.
On the map is shown the 1984-93
situation when only the last three lines remained. The routes of
contempory network were:
-
1 - Infante -
Alfândega - Massarelos - Foz (Castelo) - Castelo do
Queijo - Matosinhos (11 September 1993 cut back to
Castelo do Queijo, closed 10 September 1994)
-
18 - Carmo -
Massarelos - Foz (Castelo) - Castelo do Queijo - Fonte da
Moura - Boavista
-
19 - Boavista -
Fonte da Moura - Castelo do Queijo - Matosinhos (Closed 11
September 1993)
