Services did start with trams hauled by mules. In Portugal these trams were called Americanos. This name was because the tram development was started in America. A few years later also trams hauled by steam locomotives were introduced.: the Maquina. With the electrification also many of the mule- & steamtram cars were converted into electric cars. Others became trailers. And some ended as trailers after having been electric cars.
