In
1947-52 the workshops of the STCP built 30 new tramcars. Technically they were in
many aspects similar to the other four-wheel cars. It were the
first single ended trams. The drivers had an own, but cramped cab
without possibility of seating. Because of outward and
inpopularity with the crews they got their nicknames.
Two
types existed: 24 cars (series 350-373) were of the large model, the others were of the small
model and
intended to be used as trailers. However already after
finishing the first trailer (fleetnumber 28) it was decided to make motorcars only.
The five other small trailers which were under construction on
the moment were finished as motorcars (series 400-404) while
the trailer was converted into motorcar 405. The 405 was already
very soon scrapped after a runaway accident in the steep Rua da
Restauração. Only in 1955 the series 400 got 55 hp GE-270
motors, before they probably had the equipment of former mule cars.
Their
inflexibility caused by their unidirectional construction was the
reason of withdrawal around 1973, while older, bidirectional cars
were retained in service. After 1967 they were mainly used during
the weekends for the service to the beaches.
The 373 and 400, the latter converted to
trailer 25, represent this type in the museum of Massarelos.
