Sources & responsibility

The (early) history of the Porto tram is very indistinct. There is a lack of company records, the Boavista-depot fire of 1928 destroyed many cars, the company renumbered (parts of) the fleet several times (but reasons and sequence are, except for the renumbering by the STCP around 1948, unknown) and contemporary articles fail. Until now the literature about the history of the Porto tram is still limited.

The data recorded on this site are, besides my own observations and the results of studies by Pedro Milheiro, Henrique Dias, Emídio Gardé and Luis Almeida, a combined abstract and my interpretation of the data out of the following books and publications:

  • Os Velhos Eléctricos do Porto by Manuel Castro Pereira (published in 1995)

  • O Carro Eléctrico no Porto by Helder Pacheco (published by the STCP)

  • The Tramways of Portugal by B.R. King and J.H. Price (published by the LRTA; 2nd edition of 1972, 3rd edition of 1983 and 4th edition of 1995 - ISBN 0-948106-19-0)

  • Material circulante sobre carris (published by the STCP in 1988)

  • 50 Anos do Autocarro (published by the STCP in 1998)

  • O Porto, origem, evolução e transportes by Guido de Monterey (2nd edition of 1972)

  • Os Transportes Colectivos do Porto by Fernando de Sousa & Jorge Fernandes Alves (Published by the STCP in 2001; ISBN 972-97007-1-0)

  • O Resgate da Concessão de 1906 á "Carris" do Porto (two volumes published by the Câmara Municipal do Porto / STCP in 1954 & 1957)

  • Several information folders of the Massarelos museum of the STCP

  • Narrow gauge railways of Portugal by W.J.K. Davies (published by Plateway Press - 1998; ISBN 1 871 980 356)

Moreover I was able, with the kind permission of the director Cristina Pimentel and the help of Carla Dias and Henrique Dias, to study documents present in the archive of the museum.
