Successors

In the late fifties it was decided to replace the trams by trolleybuses. However this was only realized for the lines to Lordelo, Campanhã, Gaia, Gondomar, São Pedro da Cova and Ermesinde.

Starting 1967 the trams were to be replaced by buses.
And the trolleybuses disappeared again. The trams did survive their supposed successors!

However with the growth of the number of private cars, the buses were trapped more and more in the ever increasing traffic jams. Modern trams with free right of way appeared in 2002: the Metro do Porto!
