History
In 1912 the existing line from Praça da Liberdade to
Bessa did get the number 5. In 1914 it was extended to
Matosinhos as replacement of the steam-tram, but following
the more direct route of the Avenida da Boavista to Castelo
do Queijo instead of the route via Cadouços. The CCFP
wanted in Rua Brito Capelo double track to let use both
lines 1 and 5 this street. However until 1930 the
municipality of Matosinhos did not allow double track and
the trams of line 5 kept using Rua Roberto Ivens until 1
July 1930. From this date line 5 followed in Matosinhos the
route of line 1 to Leça da Palmeira.
In 1934 the route via Palácio de Crystal - Rua Julio
Dinis was opened and this resulted in a new line 19 as a
variation of line 5. Both line 5 and 19 were cut back to
Matosinhos in 1960. Line 5 disappeared with the closure of
the Carvalhosa route in 1978. Line 19 was cut back to
Boavista in 1980. It closed on 11 September 1993.

Rolling stock
On line 5 the CCFP was allowed to use trailers. As the bogie
trailers were used on line 1, on line 5 only the 4-wheel
trailers were used. As motorcars only bi-directional 4-wheel
types were used. In January 1935 on line 5 six cars with
seating for 32 and on line 19 six cars with seating for 23
were necessary. Since the cut-back to Boavista on line 19
also bogie cars were used.
Revenue
In 1958 these lines took part of 5.5% of the revenue of the
tram system.
