History

On 13 June 1875 the mule tram-line to Campanhã was opened. This line followed from Praça Dom Pedro V the route via Rua Dom Pedro V, Bolhão and Rua Sta.Catarina. Soon the whole route from Foz (Cadouços) to Campanhã was done as one line. Since 1884 the Cadouços line was cut back to Praça Dom Pedro V and a separate line operated between Boavista and Campanhã.
In 1900 the line to Campanhã was electrified and the trams now went through Rua Sto.António (31 de Janeiro). In 1911 a route Praça da Liberdade - Bonfim - Campanhã was opened. Until 1914 there was an electric service Bessa - Boavista - Carvalhosa - Carmo - Praça da Liberdade - Batalha - Biblioteca - Campanhã, which was since 1912 indicated with "B".
For some years since 1914 the lines 11 & 12 were combined to a circular service. The clockwise route got the number 11, the anti-clockwise route the number 12. Later both services were made independent from each other again.
Line 11 closed on 11 June 1964 and line 12 on 4 March 1960.
