Line 18 Cadouços (Steam tram)RoutePraça da Liberdade - Carmo - Carvalhosa - Boavista; change for steam traction; Boavista - Fonte da Moura - Foz (Cadouços) - Castelo do Queijo - Matosinhos (Roberto Ivens)HistoryThe CCFP had the festivities for the opening of its first line from Praça Carlos Alberto to Foz (Cadouços) on 12 August 1874. Two days later the service started. In October the line was extended to Porta do Olival (Cordoaria near Torre dos Clerigos). Since August 1875 trams riding in the direction of Boavista were using Rua do Rosário instead of Rua da Cedofeita. An urban line from Boavista via Praça to Campanhã was opened a few months before. Two years later these services were combined to one line Campanhã - Foz (Cadouços). There existed a tunnel connecting Praça Duque de Beja and Rua Rosário. It was also used by the electric trams until October 1925.The line was converted for the use of steam traction between Boavista and Foz in 1878. During the first years on the Foz line there was a mixed operation with steam traction during the Summer period and mule traction during the Winter period and late hours during the Summer. In 1882 the line was extended from Foz (Cadouços) via Rua da Gondarem to Matosinhos. The line reached the Atlantic coast just south of Castelo do Queijo where it crossed with the line of the CCAPFM. In Matosinhos the line was situated in the street now called Rua Roberto Ivens, a street parallel to Rua Brito Capello. To avoid steep gradiënts a tunnel and three viaducts were constructed for the tramline.
In 1886 the CCFP constructed a wooden bridge across the river Leça near the terminus of the steam tram. This bridge was scrapped in 1922. In 1912 the Cadouços line did get the number 18 with electric traction from Praça da Liberdade until Boavista and steam traction onwards to Matosinhos. In November 1914 the steam traction was ended and the route via Foz (Cadouços) closed. With this occasion the line number 18 disappeared. It was used again for a variation of line 2 since 1934 when the new route from Carmo via Palácio to Boavista was opened. Top of pageTime-tables14 August 1874
