Urban mule tram-lines (1875-1904)

Except for the line to Foz, the CCFP also did develop a network of urban lines with animal traction (mainly paires of mules). Already in 1875 lines were opened to:
  • Palácio de Crystal;
  • Praça D.Pedro V (nowadays Praça da Liberdade) - Rua D.Pedro V - Rua Formosa - Santa Catarina - Batalha - Campanhã;
  • Praça D.Pedro V - Rua Formosa - Santa Catarina - Gonçalo Cristóvão - Campo da Regeneração (nowadays Praça da Republica) - Rua da Boavista - Cedofeita - Carmo - Praça D.Pedro V.
Also a parallel route of Rua de Cedofeita via Rua do Rosário was opened in 1875. In 1876 followed the line to Largo da Aguardente (nowadays Praça Marquês de Pombal) via Rua Costa Cabral. This last line was extended in 1877 to Cruz das Regateiras. In 1882 the line from Praça D.Pedro V to Rua dos Ingleses was opened. In the mean time the services were reorganized:
  • Matosinhos – Foz – Boavista - Praça D. Pedro I – Campanhã vv
  • Ingleses – Praça D. Pedro I - Cruz das Regateiras vv
  • Boavista – Cordoaria - Palácio de Crystal – Rua de Breyner - Praça D. Pedro I – Duquesa da Bragança – Campo de Regeneração – Boavista (one way)
After the merging with the CCAPFM the CCFP opened one more mule tramline on 21 June 1894 to Bonfim (Igreja). On 8 May 1898 this line was, still with mule traction, extended to São Roque (Mercado de Corujeira). In 1895 the Restauraçao line was electrified, included a section of the Marginal until Arrábida. Here were the first power station, depot and workshops of the electric trams. Subsequently were first electrified the Marginal and then the existing urban lines. The last mule tram ran in 1904.
