Electrification (1895-1904)
Geographical the city of Porto is beautifully situated on
hills. But for vehicles with animal traction this is a
serious disadvantage. In many streets six mules were needed
to haule a small tramcar in the ascending direction. This
economical unfeasible situation made the tramcompany to
search for an alternative kind of traction. As a kind of
pilot, the "Restauração" branch line was
electrified in 1895 (start of operation September 12).
Evidently it became a succes. During 1896-1898 the complete
Marginal was electrified.
Between 1899 and 1904 also the urban lines were converted.
The steamtram was retained until 1914.

are given on the maps. In 1904, on the moment all animal
traction was suspended, the following lines did exist:
