Steam Locomotives

In the beginning of 1878 the CCFP did test locomotives from Winterthur and Henschel for use on the line Boavista - Foz (Cadouços). The Winterthur was returned, but the locomotive of Henschel (works number 964) was acquired together with three other Henschels (works numbers 972, 994 & 995). These locomotives were of the same type as delivered later to companies in Italy, Germany and Holland.

In May1878 the CCAPFM did test a locomotive of Henschel (unknown works number) between Rua dos Inglezes (Infante) and Matosinhos. No more indications were found that the CCAPFM used steam locomotives. On the moment of merging of both companies in 1892, the CCAPFM had no steam locomotives.

Because of the extension of the line from Foz to Matosinhos the CCFP ordered another two locomotives were from Henschel (works numbers 1383 & 1384) and one from Merryweather in 1882. The fleet numbers were 1-6 for the Henschels and 7 for the Merryweather.

In 1886 four more steam tram locomotives were acquired, this time second hand from France. The origins of these four locomotives are not (yet) known. Likely it were Merryweathers from the Tramways du Sud in Paris, which might were used for some years in Béziers. It did take the workshops almost two years to get all four ready for service. Three of these locomotives, with the numbers 8-10, were sold for scrap to the Companhia Alliança in 1900, the fourth in 1903.
In 1900 the locomotives 3 & 7 did get new boilers, followed by the numbers 1, 2 & 4 in 1901 and 5 & 6 in 1903. All the new boilers were supplied by Companhia Alliança. In 1914 the steam traction was ended. On 20 November 1916 the locomotives were offered for sale but were not sold until 1919.
